What Does a Bet Mean?

The meaning of a bet will always vary from situation to situation and player to player. One person’s min raise under the gun pre flop might mean something totally different from another player who does the same thing. The time that a bet is placed in the hand, the size of the bet, the player’s style and the person they are betting into will all play a factor in determining what a bet truly means. It is impossible to pinpoint the exact meaning of every single bet every single time, but with careful consideration it will be much easier to make accurate guesses as to what your opponents are holding.

Pre Flop Betting

Pre flop play is the easiest to decipher. Standard open raise sizes will be indicative of the same types of hands from player to player. Your limits will help to define what the standard opening range is, but most players will adhere to the same guidelines. This doesn’t mean that it is poor strategy to use the same strategy pre flop in every situation, it simply means that there is little room for adjustment. All you need to do is identify what one type of bet means pre flop from a few different players in similar situations. If three different players make a re raise with AQ and AK, you would then know that the next player to do the same thing is likely to have a similar type of hand. This is not a guaranteed system and really only requires a bit of observance. If you know how you are likely to play a hand pre flop there is a good chance that your opponent is going to play  it just the same way. Adjust for a player’s style of play and it should be relatively easy to make accurate reads as to why a player is betting the way they are.

Post Flop Betting

Post flop bets are always more challenging to pick apart than pre flop bets. As the hand progresses it becomes more and more complicated. You will have to take every bit of action that happened prior to your spot in the hand in order to make an accurate guess as to why the other player is betting. Any previous action in a hand will offer tremendous amounts of insight. Once you replay the hand in your head you should then consider the particular circumstances of the spot you are in. For example, if the player has 4 bet for the first time ever it should give you a strong indication of their hand’s strength. Another area to look at would be the board. If the board is draw heavy and they are making small bets it should be fairly obvious that they are on some type of draw. It doesn’t take great analytical skills to determine what a bet means in a post flop situation, although sometimes you will just be completely lost. If the line that a player takes is extremely confusing, sometimes you will be better off making an odd bet of your own. When you don’t know what they have you can see how they react to your bets. If you still have no idea after this you should probably head for the exit doors.
